In 1975,whilst on holidays in N.S.W.,Marie & Terry Heggaton saw sheepskin products being manufactured
& marketed.
Upon their return to Tasmania,they surveyed, unsuccessfully, the availability of these products in
both Launceston & Hobart retail stores.
Having a strong belief in the versitility of both the wool fibre & sheepskin products,they felt
there was a marketing opportunity in Tasmania.
Premises in Launceston were found and in August of that year The Sheeps Back! at 53 George Street
opened for business.
Initially only sheepskin and some handspun & knitted products were sold.
Gradually commercially manufactured knitwear was added to the range Nowdays we have an enormous
range of products from pure wool underwear ,beautiful fine wool men's & women's knitwear to
Australian made sheepskin ugg boots,baby care & medical grade sheepskins to car seat covers.
The Sheeps Back! is still located at the same location & is recognised as one of Launceston's oldest & iconic family owned & operated businesses.
We recognise it is such a unique store within Australia with such an extensive range of wool
& sheepskin products.We are proud of our quality stock and particulary the personal service
provided to our valued customers who keep returning generation after generation!
Tourists to the state also enjoy shopping in our store & often return or contact us for further
products and information.
The Sheeps Back! is now owned by Terry and Marie Heggaton's son Knox and daughter in law Cate, who runs the business.
